Court Rules Against TVE & Javier Ruiz’s Mañaneros for Ayuso Misinformation

A court has ruled against the public broadcaster TVE and its program ‘Mañaneros’, stating that they disseminated inaccurate information about the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and concluding that the material broadcast failed to uphold the accuracy standards expected in news reporting.

The case also includes journalist Javier Ruiz, linked to the program, as the court determined he contributed to spreading the contested claims. The ruling states that the assertions made during the broadcast lacked adequate verification, thereby infringing Ayuso’s right to honor.

The case stems from statements made on the morning show, where issues related to Ayuso’s political management were discussed. The court determined that these assertions lacked sufficient factual support, prompting legal action from the regional leader.

As a consequence of the ruling, TVE will now be obligated to follow measures intended to remedy the damage caused, and the case underscores yet again how essential thorough fact-checking is in journalism, especially when covering public figures.
