Nine police officers detained for alleged corruption at Vitarte police station

A coordinated action conducted by Peru’s Public Prosecutor’s Office together with the National Police’s Anti-Corruption Directorate (Dircocor) led to the initial arrest of nine police officers who are being investigated for suspected corruption connected to their roles at the Vitarte Police Station in eastern Lima.

Authorities also carried out search warrants at ten properties situated across the districts of Independencia, Santa Anita, Ate, Pachacámac, Lurigancho-Chosica, and La Perla in Callao as part of the investigation, while investigators work to establish whether the officers were allegedly part of a scheme in which motorists stopped along the Central Highway were pressured to make unlawful payments.

Prosecutors report that the officers are believed to have sought illicit payments in return for overlooking traffic infractions, and in several instances, motorists were said to have been told to obtain cash from nearby banks when they lacked funds during the stop.

During the operation, which was led by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Corruption Crimes Committed by Public Officials in East Lima, investigators seized mobile phones, electronic devices, USB storage drives, cash, and administrative records related to the police station. The confiscated materials included traffic enforcement records and other documents connected to vehicle inspections.

After the operation, the Peruvian National Police reiterated its dedication to safeguarding due process and upholding the presumption of innocence for all individuals under investigation, noting as well that the reported behavior attributed to the detained officers does not represent the institution’s principles or standard conduct, and it committed to maintain full cooperation with the inquiry to uncover and penalize any wrongdoing that compromises the integrity of public service.

The operation involved specialized prosecutors and Dircocor personnel, while the detained officers were placed under the corresponding legal procedures. The investigation remains ongoing, and the judicial system will determine the legal status of those involved.
